Listening to the Voice of the Shepherd
John 10:11-16 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. I am the good shepherd; I know My sheep and My sheep know me-just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father-and I lay down My life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.
There are so many competing voices for our attention these days. Email messages/world wide web/satellite TV/cell phones/ipods/ipads/etc .all have the potential of being used for good or for ill purposes. Just go to your favorite search engine, type in love and see what comes up.
Today we hear more voices than ever before. Some of the messages that find their ways into our minds in a subliminal way.
Which voice will we hear and follow? Who or what are the wolves in your lives? What will destroy your soul and life?
What is the solution? It is important that every Christian learns and keeps learning the word of God. Martin Luther said, our very survival depends upon our recognizing the voice of Christ among the competing voices all around us
First, no matter how bad things get we have Jesus most gracious promise that He will never desert us.
Luther: I am certain that He knows me, and even though I must suffer death and all kinds of misfortune, I will not let that thwart my faith; I know and hear and stay close to His voice! For even as a shepherd tenderly calls His little sheep, so Christ also encourages me: I am your shepherd, and I have laid down My life for you, I died for you! This is the Word I hear and believe. This is my one sure guarantee that He knows me and I know Him.
Second, the sheep must learn to recognize the Shepherds voice.
Luther: Thats exactly how it is with a little sheep; its very life depends upon hearing. If it doesnt hear the shepherds voice, the wolves will soon be there. Without the shepherds voice, all joy and assurance vanish and only fear and trembling remain. Thats how it is also with a Christian: if he loses the Word, all comfort is gone; as long as he is faithful to the Word, he will behold Christ, his shepherd, and therewith everything Christ has earned and promised him, namely, forgiveness of sins and eternal life.
When you click on start on your computer, then shut down, the question comes up: Do you really want to do this? YES-IVE HEARD ENOUGH FROM THE WORLD FOR NOW. Far more important is my response in faith to Christ my Lord. I seek to listen to His voice. I gladly hear His promises to me. On May 16 four young people of St. John will be confirmed. It is my prayer that they continue to hear and listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd Jesus Christ.
Jesus says in John 10:27-29 My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Fathers hand.
May we ALL listen and hear the Shepherds voice daily!
In service to the KING of kings,
Pastor Mueller
For I resolved to know nothing while with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. (1 Cor. 2:2)

YOUTH PREPARE FOR NEW OLEANS GATHERING
July 17-21 is the triennial youth gathering of our synod in New Orleans. A group of nine youth and three adults from St. John will be attending. These final two and a half months will be filled with fund raising, Bible study, and planning for the trip. The trip dates will be July 15-22 for our group, taking a flight from
Milwaukee to New Orleans via Houston. As of this writing the tentative plan
for the last great fund raiser will be a combination brat-fry, car wash, and rummage sale, date yet to be announced. There are a few youth who still need to earn credits to go, so they will be available for volunteer projects you may have for them. (You need not pay them; they just need to put in the hours.) The Christian Thrift Store is already planning on having the youth do some cleaning once a week at the store.
The first trip of the summer will be to Noahs Ark in Wisconsin Dells Monday, June 28, meeting at church 6am and returning by 10 pm. Cost of the trip is $25 or credits. Parents or adults who drive get a free tank of gas and free admission. Call Scott to volunteer. Sign-up must be by June 1 to get our discount tickets which include an all-you-can eat (brats or burgers) and drink (water or soda) lunch.
Children and youth attending Camp Luther this summer can have most of their camp fees paid by the youth, thanks to a generous grant from one of our business-men in the congregation. An application is available on the credenza. Please take care of this right away as the camp is filling quickly and your dates or lodging choice may not be available for long.
You Can support our youth program by saving your aluminum cans, tying them up in a strong plastic bag, and tossing them into the pen by the garage. A typical monthly run to the can man yields about $50 for our group.

Help! Help! Help!
St. John Ladies Aid is planning their Spring Bazaar for May 15, 2010. We hope to have bakery and white elephants. As of now, Kathy Jesinski reports that she does not have a stash of white elephants in her garage and the sources shes had in the past have dried up. Therefore we are asking or I should say begging St. John congregation to start cleaning out their cupboards and closets and if you have any salable white elephants, please notify Linda in the church office at 276-7214. She can tell you where to deliver them or we will make arrangements for pick-up. We will accept most household items and small pieces of furniture, but no clothes please. If you know of anyone who is moving and they have things we can use, it would be great if youd let them know. If necessary, we can help pack them up. Without your help we will not be able to continue our mission work here at church and elsewhere. Our heartfelt thanks to you for whatever you can do for us. St. John Ladies Aid

ALTAR
GUILD
NEWS
I would like to thank everyone who donated towards the beautiful Easter flowers this year. They are all so lovely! Hats off to Frisch Greenhouse in Antigo for selecting and delivering our flowers to us. They are still in beautiful bloom for many to take home and enjoy. I would also like to thank all those special people who helped set-up and make church ready for Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Myrts funeral. What could have become overwhelming was just a matter of a little bit of team work. Thank you all. Our Easter decorators! What an amazing bunch you are. We are so blessed at St. John to have you. All those extra helpers who just seemed to appear. Thank you all. You too Pastor Mueller for keeping us in line with our Altar set-up for each of our services.
We welcome Lynette Benham into our group. She has been a big help with banners and she will be on our list for monthly altar duty beginning with me in July.
Its never too late to join our altar guild. If you feel you may want to serve the Lord in this manner, jump on board. Well gladly show you the ropes. Men are more than welcome too. We have several couples that work together just great. If any youth wanted to join they can too, but they will need to be under the supervision of an adult. There are several ways to serve the Lord in altar guild. If you like to sew you can help make banners or if you have a green thumb you can work with our plants and flowers to keep them looking great. If decorating is your specialty, you can be on the Christmas and /or Easter committee. We also have loyal, committed members who set up the altar for communion. We can always use help in all of these areas. We have meetings twice times a year. Our next meeting will be on Monday, September 13th at 4pm for our fall cleaning and 5pm for meeting. Please think about it and if you decide to join, call the church office 715-276-7214 or me 715-276-3801 or my email sueike@yahoo.com.
St. John Altar Guild would like to thank Jean Greenwood for her donation of our new flagon in memory of her brother Eugene Paul Stern. The flagon was dedicated during April 17-18 church services. Members of St. John Altar Guild, please note there are factory instructions on cleaning our new flagon which will be posted in the altar guild room. It is important that we follow these instructions for long lasting use of our flagon.
I would like to thank Mike and Mary Lintner for the two beautiful brass planters. They will be complimenting plants at St. John for many years to come.

Tribute to Moms
During the H1N1 flu epidemic, a mother took her 4-year old daughter to get a shot. When the child saw the needle, she was frightened and began to protest loudly. Finally, the mother had a firm talk with her daughter. Calm down! she commanded. You have to have the shot. Its very important for your health. So settle down and be polite. Then the mother nodded to the nurse to proceed. The nurse sweetly asked, Are you ready now for your shot? The childs answer was certainly truthful- and polite. No, thank you, she said.
