Genesis 2:1-9

A detailed look at God’s creation of Adam and Eve

(The People’s Bible, Genesis, pages 28-36)

Look

  • Verse 2 “On the seventh day he rested.” This does not mean God was tired. In a modern courtroom setting, a lawyer might say, “The defense rests.” This means the defense is finished with its case, not that it is going to stop doing any work. The Lord rested because he was finished with creation.
  • Verse 4 “When”—The creation of Adam and Eve took place on the sixth day (1:26). Genesis chapter 2 is a flashback, giving more details about their creation.

  • For the first time, Moses uses God’s proper name: YHWH (Yahweh, or Jehovah). This name reminds us of God’s free and faithful grace. The NIV indicates that the Hebrew is using this word with the spelling “Lord.”

    1. What does it mean that God set aside the seventh day as a holy day? Hint: Think of what God commanded the Jewish people to do on the seventh day. What were they to think about while they were doing this?

    2. Describe what the earth was like before God created Adam.

    3. How was man’s creation different from that of the animals?

    4. Contrast the theory of evolution with God’s statement that everything was very good.
