Genesis 1:6-19

God creates the sky, land, sea, plants, and lights

(The People’s Bible, Genesis, pages 14-20)

Look

  • Verse 6 “Let there be an expanse between the waters.” What does this mean? A possible answer is that God placed some of the waters above the earth, somewhere in our atmosphere. The expanse would serve the purpose of keeping the waters separate. This would result in a canopy of vapor over the earth to make a true greenhouse effect on the preflood world and give the world its moisture and climate. If this is true, it would explain where a large portion of the floodwaters came from (Genesis 7:11). It would possibly explain why there was no rainbow until after the flood. Without the bright sun, water vapor would not display the rainbow effect.
  • Verse 12 Notice that the trees were created in their mature state. They could bear seed. The creation was made with an appearance of age.

    2. See the point about the “expanse” above. How absolute can we be in our teaching on this?
