With Greatful Hearts

Oh God, we come before you to praise you for your overwhelming kindness toward us all. How loving and generous you are! How merciful and supportive day by day you are to us.

What a beautiful and bountiful earth-home you have provided for us. Sometimes the beauty and majesty of what we see before us is breathtaking. Dear Lord we need not understand the brilliance we see in your creation; we only need to know that you are mindful of us, that you care for us, that your love for us is unfathomable and everlasting.

We gladly affirm that you are our loving Lord who has provided for all of our needs. For all your gracious and loving acts- and especially for our hope of salvation through Christ our Lord- we express our profound and everlasting thankfulness. Amen

Dave and Willow

June is the month that is often referred to as the “wedding” month. Historically, June has always been the most popular month for weddings. That is where the term "June bride" comes from. The month of June derives its name from Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage. It was anciently thought that couples who married in June would be blessed with prosperity and happiness. Although June has statistically been the most popular month for centuries, July and August have been surpassing June for last several years.

Why these thoughts of weddings? I attended a wedding on May 22 in Wausau. I had done all the pre-marital counseling for the couple but didn’t officiate. The “officiate” part of the ceremony lasts on average 1-2 hours (including the rehearsal); the counseling takes 15 or more hours (not including the preparation!).

I love to do pre-marital counseling. Why? Because you get to build a relationship with a couple. You have a chance to prepare them for a lifetime of faithfulness and commitment. Most importantly: you get to tell the couple about God’s definition of marriage from His Word. God has a lot to say about marriage; from “in the beginning He made them male and female,” (Gen. 1:27) to “submit to one another out of reverence to Christ.” (Eph. 5:21) There are, of course, many more passages in Scripture.

There are many in our society who just want to “use” the church. Some think they have the “right” to be married in “a” church because they believe it will make their marriage more “sacred.” (whatever that means..) Some have no knowledge of what Scripture teaches about marriage. As a Pastor I do “Christian” weddings. That assumes that the couple has faith and wants God’s blessings and direction for their marriage. The vows of the couple at the Wausau wedding were written personally-they reflected a Christian faith and commitment-first to the Lord and then to one another.

Preparation for such a lifetime of commitment under Christ as husband and wife is important to me. If you are planning to be married at St. John please give me at least 10 months in advance for planning and etc.

What about Dave and Willow you might ask? Dave and Willow haven’t been able to be together yet but hope to consummate their relationship sometime in the Fall. All they can do now is make grunting noises at each other from a distance. I read about this couple from the Green Bay Gazette on May 25. Willow is the new female moose at the NEW Zoo in Green Bay after Flo (the former female moose) died last December. Willow is a 10-year-old moose donated by the Riverside Zoo in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Dave, the zoo’s male moose, has to wait for a reunion until Willow goes through the quarantine rules for newly acquired wildlife. They hope to breed in the fall and there are hopes for a baby moose in spring of 2011.

What’s the big deal? Marriage preparation is crucial (especially when talking about communication) and it’s great when a couple does more than “grunt” at one another from a distance. Our Lord would have us enjoy life to the full and that includes a blessed wedded life.

May our Lord continue to bless those couples that honor Him and faithfully serve Him-without grunting at one another….!

In Jesus,

Pastor Mueller

“For I resolved to know nothing while with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” (1 Cor. 2:2)

LADIES AID NEWS

Sue E. in place of Jan (who was in Michigan working on convention) began our meeting with a computer prayer entitled “To God.com.” After prayer we all enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by Emi and Lorry. Thank you!

Pastor Mueller gave our devotion on “Living Our Lives So Others Know We Are Christians.” We may be the only Jesus that people may see. We need to be who we say we are. Depend on Jesus and He will take care of it.

Lynn S. read the Secretary’s Report on the LWML Rally and told of correspondence we received.

Kathy J. gave the Treasurer’s Report.

In her absence, Kathy M. sent in a Project Compassion Report for April-5 Birthday, 4 Get Well, 11 Thinking of You. May-6 Birthday, 3 Get Well, 1 Sympathy, 10 Thinking of You, and Linda sent 3 Sympathy.

Old Business

Comments on Rally- Speaker was great, food was very good-went well.

Bazaar-Set up Thursday, May 13th at 9am.

Bazaar on Saturday, May 15th, 9am-2pm. Need bakery in by 8:30am and need helpers to price bakery.

Clean up on Monday, May 17th, 8:30am.

Convention in Houghton-Need people to help on Wednesday, May 26th, 10am to stuff convention foldrs. Jill mentioned and discussion followed on bakery for Bazaar. All agreed that whatever was brought in for the bakery has to be okay. No limitations on what type of bakery. Original discussions were that we were just trying to emphasize things that sold well-never did we mean to limit what was brought.

New Business

Discussion on Ladies Aid memorial for Shirley Kornetzke-Jill made motion to purchase hymnal with her name in it and motion was seconded by Carol St. Louis-Herb. Motion passed.

Discussion on having an alternate for the convention with Ladies Aid paying ½ the expenses. No one is interested in being an alternate at this time.

Had discussion on updating funeral dinner guidelines. Linda will put in the Eagle the letter each family receives at the arranging of a loved ones funeral. All felt we want tablecloths on all tables for funeral dinner. We need “reserve” signs for family tables. We need to wash any dishes set out even if they are not used. It was mentioned that we should continue to do funeral dinners until we just can’t do them any more and we welcome any and all help from any member of our church.

Mission Sewing- May 10th and 17th, June 14th and 21st.

Hostesses for June- Lynn and Kathy J.

We celebrated birthdays in May and closed with the Lord’s Prayer.

Next meeting, June 8th at 1pm.

Respectfully submitted by Lynette Shaffer

ALTAR

GUILD

NEWS

We have received our pink candle added to our blue for Advent. The pink candle is lit on the third Sunday of Advent, known as the Angel’s Candle. It is the candle of Joy.

If you feel you may want to serve the Lord in this manner, jump on board. We’ll gladly show you the ropes. Men are more than welcome too. We have several couples that work together just great. If any youth wanted to join they can too, but they will need to be under the supervision of an adult. There are several ways to serve the Lord in Altar Guild. If you like to sew, you can help make banners or if you have a green thumb you can work with our plants and flowers to keep them looking great. If decorating is your specialty , you can be on the Christmas and/or Easter committee. We also have loyal, committed members who set up the altar for Communion. We can always use help in all these areas. We have meetings twice a year. Our next meeting will be on Monday, September 13th at 4pm for our fall cleaning and 5pm for meeting. Please think about it and if you decide to join us, call the church office 715-276-7214 or me, 715-276-3801 or my e-mail sueike@yahoo.com

ST. JOHN

ONLINE by Benny

A website isn't very helpful if it is not updated regularly. People tend to quit going to websites if there is nothing new to offer. St. John is a Christ centered church that believes in the inerrancy of the Bible and our need for forgiveness. Our website, www.stjohn-townsend.org, is a reflection of our church. Please go to the site and click on What We Believe to read a statement of our faith. Here are the top ten reasons to bookmark our site and refer to it daily!

1. Dateline Townsend! Scott updates this every day with news you can use about our church and our community

2. Lutheran Hour Ministries Daily Devotion.

3. Read The Bible in 1 Year! Daily Bible Readings that will take you through the Bible in 1 year, and you get to choose the translation!

4. 5 Minutes Daily With Martin Luther. A new link on our site lets you spend a few minutes a day with our famous reformer!

5. The St. John Eagle is now online!

6. Many of Pastor Mueller's Bible Study's will be online and don't tell anyone but he sometimes even provides the answers!

7. If you are seeing red that is how we indicate recent updates to our pages.

Hi, my name is Laura Rouse, I am the local coordinator who places foreign exchange students in our local high schools. I am trying to find a family that could host a boy from Brazil for this upcoming school year. I am searching for a family that has similar interests as this student.

The boy’s name is Andrade, he is from Brazil, he will be a junior when he arrives here the first week of August. He will turn 17 in October of this year. Andrade has an A grade point average and speaks very fluent English. He takes his academics very seriously, but also loves sports. His favorite activity is fishing but he also enjoys biking, basketball, swimming, volleyball, soccer, tennis, horseback riding, movies, cooking, playing the guitar, reading and theater. He wants to learn American football, skiing/snowboarding, golf, baseball, art/drawing and theater. He enjoys sports and being active. Andrade has a great attitude toward life.

Fishing and basketball are his favorite sports and he loves dogs. At home he is responsible for keeping his room clean. He is organized, thoughtful, family oriented, curious, a little shy at first, but mature and open minded.

Andrade is Catholic and attends services occasionally, he is comfortable staying with a family who is not Catholic and open to attending most services with them.

His Father is in the military and his Mom is a public employee, he has one brother who is 2 years younger than he.

Andrade’s teachers feel he is honest, sincere, and takes his studies very seriously and would be an excellent representative of his country.

All students come with their own spending money and insurance. We look for families that can provide room and board, a loving caring environment, and transportation when needed.

For more information about Andrade and how to become a host family, please call Laura Rouse at 715-473-5031 or 715-889-0134.

*We feel hosting an exchange student is a great opportunity to share your life and beliefs with another. This program has enriched our lives and our families forever.

Sincerely,

Kevin & Jill Marshall

"Garage Sale Impressions"

During the week my schedule is full, so I enjoy a "slow," unscheduled Saturday. This Saturday was unscheduled, so I decided to take some off time and go garage sale hunting. It was a fun morning of looking at a variety of items for sale around the area.

Two churches were having garage sales, so they were on my list of stops. The first church was well organized and had lots of good deals. I found a Pfaltzgraff mug and a Corning Ware sauce pan for the microwave. I paid 20 cents for both items. (I prefer to call it "frugal," rather than "cheap.")

The second church held their yard sale outside in their parking lot. The stands seemed to go on forever. I doubled my spending (40 cents) and got two more items. It was a fun, relaxing time for me of seeking out bargains and watching people.

The first church is probably more in line with my beliefs. However, no one from that church spoke to me or to other shoppers. When you paid for items, they were friendly as they cashed you out. Otherwise, the people who were talking together came together or were fellow members of that church. It might not have been so noticeable, except that I went on to the second church.

At the second church, I heard someone on a loud speaker as soon as I entered the parking lot. His comments were humorous, informative (food for sale) and entertaining. His voice was welcoming and joyful. When he wasn't speaking, the air was full of music. (Not my style of music, but nonetheless music played with Christian words.) The stand keepers were smiling and pleasant. They weren't pushy, but they were open to conversations. The air was full of chatter and everyone was included in it.

As I was leaving the church parking lot, the gentleman was on the speakers again. "This yard sale isn't the only thing that happens here. We also have worship services starting tomorrow morning at 9:45 a.m. and every Sunday morning. We'd like to see everyone in this parking lot now joining us for services tomorrow. Everyone is welcome."

I don't need a new home church since we already have one. However, if I were looking for a church, which church do you think I would check out?

There are people who are seeking a place to worship the Lord. Have we put out the welcome mat? Have we demonstrated Jesus?

TO OUR DADS

Happy Father’s Day June 20, 2010

When Harry and Agnes of Snohomish, Washington, got married, they intentionally decided to have a strong family life. So when they had children, they built a summer cabin on a small island. There they played games and spent time together. They prayed and showed Christian love to others. When Harry and Agnes died, the family didn’t stop gathering. As Harry neared death, he said: “I’ve done everything I wanted to do. I have no regrets.” He had lived an intentional life, planned out as well as could be expected. At Harry’s funeral, the pastor said: ”Our time on earth is limited, and God calls us to be good stewards by living intentionally. That means using everything we have…in ways that would delight God. So that at the end of our lives, we might have no regrets.”

Sundays are special because we show our love for our heavenly Father together. On this Father’s Day, we will worship God and honor our earthly fathers as he commanded.

A father asked his 7-year-old son to say the mealtime prayer. “All right,” the boy said. “Let’s pray.” When every head was bowed, the boy prayed, “Lord, we thank you for the pancakes we’re going to eat tonight. Amen.” “Jimmy,” his father said. “I think you should know we’re having chicken, not pancakes, tonight.” “I know,” Jimmy answered. “I just wanted to see if God was paying attention.”

A man was met at the gates of heaven by St. Peter, who said, “It will take 1,000 points for you to be admitted. The way you lived your life will determine your points.” The man said, “Unless I was sick, I attended worship every Sunday and sang in the choir.” “That’s 50 points,” said St. Peter. “What else?” “I gave liberally to the church,” the man said. “Twenty-five points,” replied St. Peter. “Anything else?” “I was the best father to my children I could be,” he replied. “We all played, worked, laughed, cried, and learned about our Savior, Jesus, in Sunday School, which I also taught.” “That’s great work for the Lord, but it’s worth only 25 points,” noted St. Peter. The man became frantic. “You know,” he said, “at this rate the only way I’ll get into heaven is by the grace of God!” Peter smiled as he said, “That’s worth 900 points! Come on in!”

After crawling into Grandpa’s lap, little Freddie asked, “Were you in the ark with Noah, Grandpa?” The grandfather chuckled, “Why, no, son, I wasn’t.”

The youngster persisted, “Then why weren’t you drowned?”

CHRIZO AND EGGS

1 package chrizo sausage

1 medium to large onion

1 large green pepper

12 eggs

Puff Pastry (I used 3 sheets)

Cheese (any type you like)

Take out puff pastry to thaw. Brown chrizo. If too greasy, cook a little longer and pour the grease off. Add peppers and onions. Cook until done. Add eggs. Roll thawed pastry to a thinner thickness (so you can roll-up with little trouble). Spread mixture onto pastry. Add

cheese. Other ingredients may be added, experiment and make it your own. Roll up pastry and slice in ¼ to 3/8 inch slices. Lay on baking sheet which has been covered with parchment paper. Bake in

350 oven for 15-20 minutes or till it looks done. Enjoy.

SHMILY

Shirley Dobson tells of a game her grandparents played called SHMILY. They took turns writing that word in unusual places for the other to find. For example, when steam would gather on the bathroom mirror, one or the other would write "SHMILY" on it with a bare finger.

Apparently the word could show up anywhere- even on sugar or salt spilled on the kitchen counter. The game lasted a lifetime.

When Sirley's grandmother died, a boquet ribbon had the letters SHMILY on it. What did they stand for? They were the first letters of the words; See How Much I Love You.
